چکیده

The phenomenon of modulation instability of continuous-wave (cw) solutions of the cubic–quintic complex Ginzburg–Landau equation is studied. It is shown that low-amplitude cw solutions are always unstable. For higher-amplitude cw solutions, there are regions of stability and regions where the cw solutions are modulationally unstable. It is found that there is an indirect relation between the stability of the soliton solutions and the modulation instability of the higher-amplitude cw solutions. However, there is no one-to-one correspondence between the two. We show that the evolution of modulationally unstable cw’s depends on the system parameters. © 2002 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: 190.5530, 190.5940, 140.3510, 320.5540.

Optically-pumped saturable absorber for fast switching between continuous-wave and passively mode-locked regimes of a Nd:YVO4 laser.

We report on the fast (approximately 50 micros) remote-controlled switching between continuous-wave (cw), cw mode-locked (ML) and Q-switched ML modes of operation of a Nd:YVO(4) laser using an optically-pumped saturable absorber (SA). Pulses as short as 40 ps with an average output power of 0.5 W are obtained in cw ML regime.

Multisoliton regime of pulse generation by lasers passively mode locked with a slow saturable absorber

The passively mode-locked laser1–5 has been a muchstudied device in recent years. Ultrashort-pulse generation in laser systems makes use of a variety of schemes, including figure-of-eight fiber laser design,1 fast saturable absorbers,4 additive-pulse mode locking,5 and nonlinear polarization rotation.6,7 The use of a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror8 with a relatively slow response time ...

Passively Q-switched mode-locking of Tm:YAP laser based on Cr:ZnS saturable absorber.

Using a Cr:ZnS wafer as the saturable absorber, diode-pumped passively Q-switched mode-locking of a Tm:YAP laser at 1976 nm has been realized for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, and nearly 100% modulation depth of Q-switched mode-locking was achieved. The width of the mode-locked pulse was estimated to be about 980 ps with a repetition rate of 350 MHz within a roughly 300-ns-long ...

Experimental Study of a Flash-lamp Pumped Passively Q-Switched Nd:YAG Laser Using Cr4+:YAG Saturable Absorber

This paper deals with the experimental results of a xenon flash-lamp pumped passively Q-switched Nd:YAG laser using Cr4+:YAG saturable absorber. The need of a laser cavity to be integrated into a time-of-flight laser range finder is of great interest as an experimental investigation of several laser resonators. Two types of laser resonator, with different lengths, have been studied: the flat-fl...

Diode-pumped femtosecond passively mode-locked Yb:LPS laser

A diode-pumped passively mode-locked Yb:Lu2Si2O7 (Yb:LPS) laser is demonstrated for the first time, to our knowledge. Using a commercial semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) as the mode locker and a pair of GiresTournois interferometer (GTI) mirrors for group-velocity dispersion (GVD) compensating, we have obtained stable femtosecond mode locked pulses. Two output couplers of transmi...
